About this website
This website has been developed by GRID-Arendal for the Abidjan Convention Regional Sea (UNEP) in the framework of the Abidjan Convention State of the Marine Environment pilot project.
The purpose of this website is to offer a tool for member states of the Abidjan Convention to capture and present, in an accurate, useful and practical format, key information on the state of the marine and coastal environment in terms of its current condition and pressures influencing the condition and the drivers of those pressures. The tool can be used on a (sub-)regional as well as a national scale and is scalable and flexible in terms of parameters.
The objectives of State of the Marine Environment reporting are to:
• make available relevant and useful information on the state of the marine environment, including trends in condition in recent years, for policy and decision makers.
• give the public access to accurate, up-to-date information on the state of the marine environment.
The methodology that is used to develop the assessments is based upon a rapid expert elicitation process, whereby regional or national experts on marine biology/ecology, physical/chemical as well as socio-economic aspects provide an expert judgment across a wide range of selected marine environmental and socio-economic parameters. More information can be found in on the methodology page.
The tool is available for use by other Regional Seas as well as individual states wishing to report on the state of their marine environment.
